Winterkill kate boorman6/29/2023 ![]() ![]() The added dread of La Prise, aka the Winterkill, just magnifies the aspects of survival and hard work evident in this isolated group of people. So, yes-one will expect the night watch, the mysterious boogieman dwelling just beyond the reaches of the settlement, the fort-like community that has existed for who knows how long and whose origins no one is fully clear on. Yes, this plot line will remind you of The Village, but thankfully the pull of that similarity led me into a story that ended up being very different and very unexpected. Incredible escapism.įirst off, I was enthralled with the worldbuilding. I read Winterkill in one day and I have three kids. You know how you just want to kill some characters for being way too curious, leading to their inevitable demise? As a warning, this is how you will feel, over and over again, with Emmeline.but can you really blame her? This story has so many curious mysteries about it that you know she has to follow her dreams (literally), and you are going to go along for the ride with her. ![]()

Devil's Kiss by Ella Frank6/28/2023 ![]() He walked around to the side of his Jeep and pulled open the door. He was so damn antsy lately, and for that he could thank his brother, Alan. With a smoke between his lips, he lit up, then shoved the pack back in his shorts. There’d been a reason he hadn’t come around to see Finn when he first moved back from Chicago two months ago, but it wasn’t something he was in the mood to talk about yet, even if he was one of the two people on the planet who would get all the shit he’d been dealing with. ![]() ![]() But he’d known he had to make an appearance sooner or later otherwise Danny boy would’ve shown up asking questions. That was gonna get old real quick if he had to stomach their nauseating displays of I love yous longer than the fifteen minutes he’d been in there. He needed a f*cking cigarette after watching Daniel Finley and his damn professor get all sappy and shit. As he strolled toward the curb, he pulled a pack of Marlboros from the pocket of his shorts and flipped open the top. It was the first day of August, and if the sweltering Floridian sun was any indication, today was going to be hotter than hell’s waiting room. ![]() ![]() DEREK PEARSON PUSHED open the door of Leighton, Finley & Associates, and stepped out on the paved sidewalk. ![]()

Kill switch book adam jentleson6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() The filibuster is part of that story, but far from the whole of it. But in the scaffolding around this timely policy argument there’s a much more complex story about the Senate as an institution and its role in American democracy. ![]() Calhoun and its deployment to delay civil rights legislation for many decades, while at the same time showing that the filibuster-as-supermajority is not rooted in the structure or any original conception of the Senate and has been changed often, Jentleson makes an entirely persuasive, historically sound, well-researched case. In tracing the filibuster back to its roots in the pro-slavery pretextual political theory of John C. ![]() Its author spent the first months of 2021 making the rounds of MSNBC panels to make that case to the already-convinced. Because the book arrives at a moment when the legislative filibuster is the hinge on which voting rights and most of President Biden’s agenda after the American Rescue Plan (passed through a tortured budget procedure that requires only 50 votes) depends, Kill Switch has been read mostly as an extended case for filibuster reform. Mark Schmitt reviewed Kill Switch, Adam Jentleson's book on the Senate filibuster, for Democracy Journal. ![]() |
